The spoiler-light setting before you begin the dark-fantasy journey.

The game takes place in early Edo-period Kyoto. Capcom describes shrines, temples and streets distorted by Malice into an eerie dark-fantasy capital.

Musashi’s Oni Gauntlet gives him the power to face the Genma threatening the city. The opening question is not only whether he can win, but why he keeps fighting.

04The pitch, without spoilers the demo already gave away
Official site copy is the safest plot paragraph: fight through bloodstained swordplay, explore Edo-period Kyoto twisted by Malice, battle Genma, follow a samurai who wields the Oni Gauntlet and is looking for a reason to fight. The 25 August PlayStation.Blog interview adds the cosmology Capcom rebuilt from zero: Genma dwell in hell and spill through portals when Malice overflows; Oni exist to guard those gateways. The world is centred on the real Rokudo Chinno-ji Temple. There is no storyline connection to earlier Onimusha games. Sasaki Ganryu has a gauntlet too. Okuni wants power for her own war. Dokyo manufactures monsters under the city. Shuten Doji has taken Mount Oe. The characters page is the seating chart. The demo’s Kiyomizu-dera slice is a prologue in tone even if the save will not import. You learn that the temple is sick, that Issen exists, that Ganryu is not going to die in the tutorial. The walkthrough tracks where the spine goes next without pretending we have chapter titles.
05Not a sequel, still an Onimusha
GameSpot’s interview line is the one to remember: Way of the Sword is not connected to previous Onimusha games or the Netflix show, because Capcom wanted new players to understand the story. Genma remain the antagonists. Souls remain the battery. Issen remains the signature. Samanosuke, Jubei, Soki — those men are history. This Musashi does not need you to have saved them. If you want the old plots anyway, play the remasters; do not wait for this campaign to recap them. Capcom’s 2 July 2026 press release puts series shipments at 9.10 million. The last mainline entry was Dawn of Dreams in 2006. Producer Akihito Kadowaki has said the studio always wanted to continue and could not free the people until RE Engine matured around 2020. That is the production story. The fiction story is simpler: a swordsman, a cursed city, a glove that eats the dead.
06History the writers actually used
Musashi and Ganryu are historical swordsmen. Okuni is the founder of kabuki; Yamashita has wanted her in a script for decades. Ono no Takamura is a Heian-era scholar-poet restaged as a veteran gauntlet-bearer. Shuten Doji is the oni of Mount Oe in folklore. Nihei also said the wooden pillars under Kiyomizu-dera’s stage match the real count, and that Kennin-ji’s Twin Dragons ceiling painting was kept even though it did not exist in the Edo period — they wanted the awe of walking in today. The map is where those names sit on the ground. Mifune’s face is the other historical bet. Capcom spent two years on the license because they consider him the samurai-film face. That choice tells you the tone they want: dusty, loud, a little theatrical, not a photoreal silent sim. Previewers who called Musashi “kind of an idiot” in the best way were responding to that bet landing.
07What this page will not do
It will not leak a fake ending. It will not recap a 20-hour campaign from a 40-minute demo. After September 4 it will gain a spoiler-labelled synopsis. Until then, if you want more story, play the demo, watch the official character series with Yuriri Naka and Shogo Miyakita, and read the preview roundup for tone — not for plot twists someone invented in a comments section.
