RESOURCE GUIDE
Souls and the Oni Gauntlet: collect with intent
The official premise is clear: Genma souls feed the Oni Gauntlet. The practical decision is when it is safe to collect.
01The confirmed role
Capcom links Genma souls to the gauntlet’s power. Treat collection as part of the encounter rhythm, not an automatic post-fight chore.
02Collect safely
After an enemy falls, scan the room before committing. In a crowded space, clearing the next threat can be more valuable than optimizing a pickup.
- Finish visible threats first.
- Use the camera to check flanks.
- Learn the collection feedback in your build.
03Avoid invented farming routes
A route is useful only when it identifies a build and repeatable location. Normal progression is better than a copied “best farm” claim you cannot reproduce.
04Resource decision after a kill
Before absorbing souls, ask three questions: is another enemy in range, can the camera see the approach, and do I need healing or a power resource immediately? If any answer is unclear, step to safety first. This turns the soul mechanic from a reflex into a choice.
05The three colours
Yellow restores health. Drink it when a string is over, not while a club is in the air. Daidara’s grab will steal the bank you were saving; a yellow drink after his wall slam is the correct greed. Red is the upgrade currency — equipment, skills, the long-term Musashi. Bank it, spend it at the menus the game opens (Spirit Mirror and the equipment screen unlock as you go; they are not all available in the first courtyard). Blue fuels Oni Armaments: the bow, dual clubs, spear, and whatever else the full kit adds. Armament kills refund extra yellow, which is why a blue spend can be a heal in disguise. Wikipedia’s combat summary and Game Informer’s Osaka preview agree on those roles. Nintendo Life noted the walking-while-absorbing change as the headline quality-of-life shift from Warlords and Samurai’s Destiny. If you are a returning fan, that is the sentence that will save your first hour. If you are new, ignore the history and hold the button.
06How to absorb, mechanically
Hold the Armament / absorb input. On the published Basic charts that is R1 / RB hold, with some regional charts also listing L2 / LT. The controls page flags the discrepancy; the in-game prompt wins. You can move. You cannot swing. If a Genma is still standing, you are drinking in a fight and you will lose the trade. Clear the pack, then hold. Issen and Break Issen change the payout. True Issen already prints more souls than a normal kill. Break Issen on a boss lets you pick the chest for extra red. If you are building toward a charm loadout on the items page, chest Break Issen is the farm. If you are trying to end Ganryu this attempt, pick the head.
07Oni Armaments and the voice in the metal
Armaments are limited-use weapons spent from blue. The bow charges. Clubs and spear hit like tools rather than like a second katana. The combat page lists them among the eight techniques. Spend blue when a group is wasting your stamina on arrows, then absorb the yellow refund. Hoarding blue through a whole demo run is how people reach Daidara with a full Oni gauge and an empty health bar. The voice in the gauntlet is the Oni Lady. She is a character, not a narrator skin. She will appear in person when she decides it is necessary. You do not unlock her with souls. You listen, you fight, and you read the story primer if you want the Oni / Genma history without a 2006 recap.
08Launch-week spending
Until the full skill tree is public, do not overthink red. Buy whatever the first menus offer that shortens a fight you already hate. Charms from editions and from the demo (Kubi Akari) occupy the same slot family — they are not souls, but they are the other half of “how Musashi gets stronger.” After September 4 this page will add exact upgrade costs. Until then, drink yellow, spend blue, bank red, and keep walking while you do it.
FAQFrequently asked questions
Why can’t I absorb while attacking?
The hold replaces your attack. Finish the pack, then drink. Walking is allowed; swinging is not.
Do souls carry from the demo?
No. Only the Kubi Akari completion flag carries. Soul banks reset.
Which colour should I prioritise?
Yellow if you are dying. Blue if groups are wasting you. Red if you are stable and thinking about the campaign.
Does Issen give more souls?
Yes. True Issen pays better than a normal kill. Break Issen on the chest pays extra red on bosses.
