DEMO BOSS

How to beat Sasaki Ganryu

A focused, source-backed page for the demo’s sword-rival duel.

01Who you are fighting

In history, Sasaki Kojirō (Ganryū) is the swordsman Musashi kills at Ganryūjima. In this game he is a recurring campaign rival, not a one-off demo toy — CAPCOM has already said you will meet him again after launch. He uses reach, Tsubame Gaeshi flavouring, and the same gauntlet language you do. English voice: Tashinga Bepete. He talks during the fight. Let him talk. Your job is the blade. If you want the character context — why he is here, how he sits next to Okuni and the Oni Lady — that lives on the characters page. This page is only the duel.

02Choose a lane before phase two

Hands-on previews and demo write-ups agree on the same mistake: treating Ganryu like a FromSoftware boss with twelve interlocking systems. He is not. The fight is beatable with a single answer, cleanly repeated. Decide in the loading door: The parry and deflect guide and the Issen guide exist so this page does not have to re-teach the verbs. Read one of them, then come back. Mixing all four in a first attempt is how the grab in phase two catches you with an empty stamina bar. Musashi vs Sasaki Ganryu no-damage boss fight The no-damage clip above (Musashi vs Ganryu) is a useful timing reference, not a required standard. Watch the space between his shoulder twitch and the blade arrival. That gap is the Issen beat. If you need a slower explanation, the how to play page drills the same beat on fodder enemies.

  • Parry main — highest damage, highest risk. Hold or tap guard on his direct swings; punish the opening. Boosts your damage when it lands.
  • Deflect main — safer stagger, also swats anything he throws. Grind him down. A missed deflect is still a block.
  • Dodge main — viable, lower stagger. Esoterickk’s public no-hit used a dodge-only route to prove the point.
  • Issen main — tightest window, cinematic payoff. Attack on the frame his cut would land. See the Issen guide before you try this as your only tool.

03Moves to respect

Blade Barrage. He locks you in a clash. Match the attack type: one-handed answer to one-handed, two-handed to two-handed, on the beat his sword would hit you. Mash is not a strategy; matching is. Lose the barrage and you eat a chunk of stamina. Three-strike poke. Two quick stabs, then a heavier cut that can glow red. The red swing deletes stamina if it lands. Parry all three if that is your lane, especially the last. If you are dodge-main, roll the first two and be ready for the delayed third. Kick into slash. He stamps, then cuts. Parrying both briefly stuns him. If the kick timing feels ugly, dodge the kick and parry or deflect the slash. Do not greed a punish on the kick itself. Grab, from about half health. Contextual counter, not a parry. Press the interact / counter button when the tell shows. A grab that lands is a momentum reset — health, camera, and your composure. Hold an Oni Armament for the stretches where he turtles, and absorb yellow souls only in the downtime after a string, never mid-swing.

04Story versus Action

Story difficulty still lets him kill you if you ignore grabs, but the parry window is kinder. Action is the intended “I came for swordplay” setting and the one most YouTube clears use. There is no reward for suffering on Action if you cannot yet see the red finisher. Drop to Story, learn the pattern, then come back. The demo is a classroom. Ganryu will return in the full campaign walkthrough with more phases; the reads you build here are the ones that scale.

FAQFrequently asked questions

Do I have to Issen Ganryu?

No. Parry, deflect or dodge can finish the fight. Issen is extra damage and style, with a tighter window.

Why does my parry fail on the last hit of his combo?

The finisher is delayed and often red-glow. Wait for the shoulder, not the second stab. Guarding early makes the last hit a stamina break.

Can Chain Issen work on him?

Chain Issen is a group tool. Bosses do not offer the slow-motion neighbour hop. Use standard Issen or Break Issen if his posture breaks.

Is this the only Ganryu fight?

No. CAPCOM has said the rivalry repeats across the campaign, echoing the historical duel. The demo is the introduction.
